10 Common IELTS Mistakes To Avoid

Hello aspiring IELTS conqueror! Gearing up to join the more than 3.5 million people who take the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration?

Navigating the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) terrain and getting that overall Band 7 or the perfect 9 can be a bit of a roller-coaster ride. But fear not! With the right strategies and some tips and tricks, you can step on those potential pitfall stones and zoom into success.

Let’s uncover the ten most common yet costly mistakes that many IELTS test-takers make so you can avoid them like a pro.

1. Procrastination: I’m sure you know the famous allure of “I’ll do it later.” Don’t fall into this trap! Procrastination can derail your study plans faster than you can say, “Jack Robinson.” Set a study schedule and stick to it like your life depends on it.

2. Ignoring Instructions: Want to be the favorite of the IELTS examiners? Then make sure you understand exactly what they’re looking for in each section of the test. Read the task instructions carefully, then read them again. Misinterpreting the task requirements can lead to catastrophic results, so don’t skim over this crucial step. Answer questions based on the essay passage and not what you already know before the test.

3. Vocabulary Overload: A rich vocabulary is certainly impressive, but bombarding your essays or speaking responses with obscure words can backfire. Focus on clarity and coherence instead of trying to impress with convoluted vocabulary. Use vocabulary that is only relevant to the question type.

4. Tunnel Vision Reading: Skimming and scanning are your best friends in the reading section. Don’t get bogged down by trying to understand every single word. Train yourself to identify key information quickly and efficiently (one more reason to practice ahead). Join the 25% of Nigerians who had a 7 Band Score after taking the test, 6.5 overall Band Score in the General Training test, and 6.7 overall in the Academic test.

5. Overlooking Grammar and Punctuation: Correct grammar and punctuation can make or mar your writing score. Pay close attention to the nitty-gritty details, and don’t let silly mistakes cost you valuable points. Cross the t’s and dot the i’s.

6. Speedy Gonzales Syndrome: Are you a fast talker like me? Remember that slow and steady wins the race, especially in the speaking section. Don’t rush through your responses like you’re auditioning for the world’s fastest talker. Take a breath, collect your thoughts, and speak clearly and confidently.

7. Memorizing Responses: IELTS examiners can sniff out rehearsed answers from a mile away, so  repeat after me: “I will not memorize scripted responses.” Focus on developing natural, spontaneous responses instead. Play plenty of case scenarios in your head before the test and give unrehearsed answers. You’re smart, and you can do it.

8. Neglecting Time Management: Time is of the essence in the IELTS exam. Practice time management strategies to ensure you allocate enough time to each section and don’t get caught off guard by the ticking clock. Time waits for no one, not even in the IELTS exam room.

9. Neglecting Practice Tests: Practice makes perfect, right? Never underestimate the power of simulated tests, as they will help identify your strengths and weaknesses. Take plenty of practice tests to get comfortable with the format and timing of the examination.

10. Not considering a preparation course: Why pay as much as N285,000 for a test without taking a preparatory course to help you smash it? One of the easiest ways to boost your chances of passing the IELTS examination in one sitting is by enrolling in a training course that specialises in making prospective candidates IELTS-ready. Of course, this MUST be complimented with self-practice.
